The Special Needs Centre located in the compound of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, now has a parking lot to accommodate persons using the services of the centre.

In addition, a new access road on the northern section of the college leads from the entrance on the northern side to the Diagnostic Centre.

The construction of the parking lot and the building of the road was pegged at a combined cost of $20M.news 20200108 2

The purpose of the centre is to stimulate the Development of Children and young people with Special Education Needs (SEN) associated with disabilities.

The idea for the centre was conceptualized at the fifth CARICOM-Cuba Summit in Cuba. An agreement was signed between CARICOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana and the Ministry of Education of Cuba in December 2015.

The centre is seen as a part of strengthening relations between the CARICOM region and the government of Cuba. The Cuban government provided the technical staff required to facilitate the training of staff members at the facility.
