Monitoring/Supervising the use of Texts

The Headteacher and class teachers have a pivotal role to ensure that the books are used for class teaching and to aid the completion of homework assignments. Education Officials, including District Education Officers, Curriculum Officers and members of MERD Unit should also be involved in the monitoring/supervision of the use of texts and exercise books.

Guidelines For Schools

The Role of the Headteacher

The Headteacher shall manage the textbooks allocated to his/her school by ensuring that:

  • a Textbook Management Committee, of about four staff members is established in Grade A and B schools.
  • all textbooks are inventorised. Refer to School Records and Documents
  • all books are stamped with the school's stamp

Storage

  1. Adequate and appropriate facilities should be in place to ensure safe and secure storage of books. This may include a repository with book racks/shelves and pallets to prevent ground moisture and destruction.
  2. The Department of Education has ultimate responsibility; assuch a representative of the Department of Education must be identified to supervise the proper storage and distribution of the books.

Uplifting Books from the Distribution Unit by Regions 1— 10

  • Regional Education Officers must uplift exercise books on a termly basis for distribution to schools in the next term.
  • Textbooks must be uplifted within 2 weeks of notice, failing which, Regional Education Officers will receive a stern warning from the Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration).
