In an effort to contribute towards literacy in Guyana, the Rotaract Club of the University of Guyana on September17, last, launched the Victoria Literacy Programme, in Victoria, East Coast Demerara.

It was hailed as promoting “green thinking” in the Caricom region and the launching of the Green Engineering syllabus by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) for its Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in Guyana was deemed a timely move by the region’s education oversight body.Accordingly , the stage is being set for the development of the green engineer sector as young academics have already indicated their intention of pursuing careers in the that field of study.

Six top-performing students at the last National Grade Six Assessment Examinations (NGSA) drawn from three primary schools within the Eccles/Ramsburg Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) recently received bursary awards from the council.The award ceremony took place on Saturday, August 20 at the Eccles/Ramsburg NDC Office.

The education and training provided to students of the Caribbean is for the most part disconnected from the human resource which the region needs for its economic development.

The University of Guyana was further bolstered on Tuesday, when it received a donation of books, courtesy of the Indian High Commission. Some 150 books of various titles were handed over to the University yesterday.

Students of St. Cuthbert’s Mission Secondary School will soon benefit from the introduction of arts and sports which are expected to aid in promoting well rounded students.Renowned Guyanese artist George Simon is working with the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs to introduce art at the school. St Cuthbert’s is the only indigenous community in Region Four.
