President David Granger on Thursday urged graduates of the Berbice High School (BHS) class 2016 to aim for higher education, particularly in disciplines of agriculture, environmental science and information technology, to ensure that they are well-positioned to make meaningful contributions to the development of a ‘green’ Guyana.

Young people in the hinterland will soon have the opportunity to benefit from leadership training and other development opportunities, like their peers on the coastland.

Ministry of Education, Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), said that in 2017, the department will be placing stronger emphasis on programmes for the hinterland.

The distribution of 1120 tablets to the seventh grade students under the Guyana Secondary Education Improvement Programme has begun with the delivery of the devices to students of the eight secondary schools included in the pilot phase.

The Innovative and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit in the Ministry of Education delivered 130 of the devices to the students of the Leonora Secondary School, and 119 to those of West Demerara Secondary in Region Three yesterday. Another batch of 89 was today handed out to the students of the Diamond Secondary today.

In an exuberant spectacle enlightening Guyanese on what the Mashramani celebrations for 2017 will be like, Mash 2017 was launched Thursday under the theme: “Celebration with dignity, liberty and greater unity.”Addressing the gathering in front of the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport Main Street office, was Minister in the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, who noted, “Our foreparents worked hard and long for us to enjoy such a rich cultural heritage.”

The Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee (SILWFC) recently hosted its Annual Bursary Awards Ceremony during which it presented awards to 12 children of sugar workers for the year 2016.Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the entity, Allan Munroe congratulated the awardees and encouraged their parents to continue supporting them in all their endeavours.

The Ministry of Education, Department of Youth is making efforts to provide young people with employment through public private partnerships, with the aim of having a batch of youths attached to organizations such as Edward B Beharry & Co Ltd, ANSA McAL Trading Ltd. and Banks DIH Ltd among others by May 2017.

Youths from the hinterland are optimistic that corporate Guyana and the Government will support their carpentry and joinery efforts, an initiative being undertaken in the ongoing Hinterland Employment and Youth Service (HEYS) Programme.
The youth programme which is a one-year initiative is intended to create that enabling environment where youth can become self-sufficient.
