President Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday announced that the government is working to deliver “comprehensive packages” for teachers across the country.

President Ali acknowledged the commitment and hard work of the teachers.

“We are working towards a comprehensive package towards the improvement of your lives,” the President said. He was speaking during a visit to the Beterverwagting Secondary School on the East Coast of Demerara where he was warmly welcomed.

He noted that the package would involve teacher pay adjustments and sustainable housing solutions.

Already, there have been salary adjustments (increases) for healthcare workers and for members of the disciplined services.

Those came after President Dr. Irfaan Ali promised salary adjustments for several categories of public servants, including teachers. The President has maintained that adjustments for teachers will come at an “appropriate time.”

Regarding Beterverwagting Secondary, he promised fixes to problems at the school.

The school will soon receive new computers and furniture.

The internet connection at the school will also be fixed while plans to rehabilitate and expand will be considered by the Education ministry.

“All of these matters will be completed before the end of the week,” President Ali said to loud applauses from the teachers and students.

Speaking directly to the students, the President said: “We are going to work hard to ensure your life is better, I want you to focus on your education [because] there are tremendous opportunities now.”
