18,821 pupils wrote the NGSA exams this year and according to the Education Minister, this year posed the most challenges and it is also the year that saw some of the greatest results.

There has been a marginal increase in the number of students who will be heading to Queens College, The Bishops High School, and other top schools this year than in previous years.

The announcement was made by Education Minister, Priya Manickchand today as she released the National Grade Six Assessment Examination results.

18,821 pupils wrote the NGSA exams this year and according to the Education Minister, this year posed the most challenges and it is also the year that saw some of the greatest results.

The Ministry of Education would usually reserve spaces for 120 students to go to Queens College, this year 167 children will go to Queens College.

Similarly, space would be reserved for 100 students to attend The Bishops’ High School but this year 145 students gained marks to attend that school.

“Where before 100 Children will go to saints, this year 120 children will go to Saint Stanislaus College. Because St. Roses is under construction, we cannot have any more children there right now. Where before 100 children will go to St. Joseph, this year 150 children will go to St. Joseph’s,” the Minister explained.

The New Amsterdam multilateral will now accommodate 100 children more than it did previously.

The Minister said the move to increase the number of students in the top schools was not a haphazard one.

“This year we are giving 1600 children a better chance. And this year we are beginning, and I commit to you personally…that you will be able to have an enriching, fulfilling, solid education at any secondary school you go to,” the Minister noted.

The Education Minister explained that the Ministry wants to move away from primary top schools which are primary schools that have a secondary department. She said the Education Ministry will continue to work to ensure better access to secondary schools for the nation’s children.
