  • Gov’t has kept its promise of inclusion for all in sports

    The National Sports Commission (NSC) recently held the first Day of Sports for Special Needs Schools. Eight schools from Berbice, Linden and Georgetown participated in the event at the Guyana Defence Force’s ground, Camp Ayanganna.

    Director of Sports, Christopher Jones told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the initiative is in keeping with the government’s manifesto that speaks to sports for all. “As a government, we don’t only take responsibility of certain individuals, but rather all,” Jones said.news 20161102

  • Ground enhancement project moving apace – Region Six grounds examined in mapping cluster

    The National Sports Commission (NSC) is working to ensure that grounds are readily available to be used by members of communities, most importantly, youths.news 20170320 8

    Over the weekend, a team from the NSC visited several dilapidated grounds in Regions Five and Six. One of the villages that benefitted from the site visit was No.53 village, East Berbice-Corentyne. Last year, through the ground enhancement fund, the community ground received $500, o00 from the ground enhancement fund which was used to purchase lights.

  • Introduction to Chess Workshop in Schools held in Bartica area

    As the promotion of chess in Guyana continues, the National Sports Commission sent National Chess Coach Wendell Meusa to Region 7 Cuyuni – Mazaruni in Bartica from the 4th – 8th June, 2016 where he conducted the Bartica Chess in School – Introduction to Chess Workshop. At the workshop, National Chess Coach Wendell Meusa worked along with Regional Sports Organiser for the Cuyuni – Mazaruni region Mr. Mark Ambrose, visited St. John’s the Baptist Primary School, Three Miles Secondary, Two Miles Primary, St. Anthony’s Primary (Main Building and Annex) and Bartica Government Secondary School.

  • Local Athletes offered full scholarship

    The National Sports Commission (NSC) Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with two athletes, providing them full scholarships to Monroe College. news 20170804 4This was disclosed during the signing held at NSC’s boardroom.
    It was announced that 12 athletes, were given full scholarships to the University of Guyana (UG) while two athletes were scouted and offered full scholarships by the Monroe College, United States of America.

    According to Director of Sports, Christopher Jones, this initiative will give persons the opportunity to participate in any sports or recreational activity after sundown.

    The company contracted for the project is IntellectStorm, an Information Technology based solutions and marketing company. It is being done at a startup cost of $2.8 million.     The National Sports Commission (NSC) today, donated sports equipment to the University of Guyana’s, Tain Campus’ Sports Department.

    A basketball backboard, a table tennis board, table tennis racquets and balls, a volley ball net and volleyballs were some of the gear presented to the Region Six department of the university.news 20161114 1

  • NSC seeking to establish sporting hub for New Amsterdam youths

    The National Sports Commission (NSC) is looking to resuscitate the abandoned sports complex in New Amsterdam, Berbice to provide another avenue for youth development.news 20170321 1

    The complex was once the sporting hub for New Amsterdam, and was used for facilitating events such as wedding receptions, parties, and sporting activities and even housed a large pool.

  • Site visit paves way for establishment of Bartica multipurpose sporting facility

    Youths of the Bartica Township, Region Seven will benefit from a $50M multipurpose sporting facility. The National Sports Commission recently, conducted a site visit in the Region to determine the best location to house the facility.news 20170221 1

    The visit was initiated by the Mayor and Councillors of the recently established town which saw the presence of the Director of Sports, Christopher Jones. In an interview with the Government Information Agency, Jones said that the multipurpose centre is an aspect of sport development coming out of the 2017 National Budget.

  • Teachers benefit from MOE/DOS/NSC cricket coaching workshop

    The Ministry of Education’s Department of Sport (MOE/DOS) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) continued their cricket coaching workshop recently with teachers from West Demerara benefitting.

    Drawn from Crane to Parika, the three-day programme, conducted by NSC Coach Latchman Yadram, attracted 16 male and female teachers at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
